Cairns, the Chill Out Town

a rocky island in the middle of a body of water

Located Far North Queensland State, Cairns is the only place in the world where two World Heritage Sites collide. The town is the gateway to explore Aboriginal and Torres Straight islander culture. The environment completely changes from the Great Barrier Reef to Rainforest, hilly green grassy farms, caving area, hot spring water and red outback by moving around not longer than 2 to 6 hours, depends where you are heading to.

If you are planning to visit Cairns, make sure you stay long enough to get to know that little paradise.

You should start your day walking along the Esplanade to contemplate the sun rising right behind Murray Prior Range and read the educational display along the footpath. If you still feel full of energy, you can also do the trails at the Botanic Gardens.

Explore Caffeys, shops and restaurants for your breakfast, lunch or dinner. You can choose from seafood to BBQ, from carnivore to vegan dishes. Asian to Italian cosine, eat on a floating restaurant (boat) or in a top floor building restaurant.

If you like culture and history, take your time to go to the museum, art gallery and zoo to acquire information about the local colonization, aboriginal culture, fauna and flora.

Hire a car and do the scenic drive towards Port Douglas. Make your stop on the way along the Northern Beaches and check other luxury or simple possibilities of accommodations. The Rex lookout along the way is another place you should not miss out.

A Cassowary is also something you must chase while in Cairns. The bird is an endanger pre-historic specie just found in the Northern part of AUS, New Guinea, Indonesia, East Nusa Tenggara and the Maluku Islands. You have high chances to see the exotic bird in the place called Etty Bay, 1h30m driving south of Cairns CBD.

As you drive south of Cairns, take advantage to hike the Walsh`s Pyramid Mountain. It takes about 4 to 5 hours return to hike the highest (922m) monolith in the country. If you decide to do that, make sure you go early in the morning and take water and some snacks with you. It can be very hot during the day but the view at the summit is worth it.
